Main Task: Evaluation FINAL

Main Task: Post Production Feedback

Post Production Feedback

After finishing my final products for my magazine i presented it to some of my peers to give me feedback on my pieces and tell me what the strengths and weaknesses were. using this information i am able to reflect on my pieces and can attain the information that if i was to do it again would improve my work.

Front Cover -Strengths

When i asked for feedback on my final products they firstly said that the consistency throughout is very clear with a limited range of colours to keep the professional look as to many colours would go against the typial magazine of this genre. The use of consistency throughout also allows a reader to feel that it is all from te same magazine. Another thing they said was the variation in text and font size on my coverlines and masthead which were very effective in attracting my audience. Finally the model that i have used does well in attracting my audience and i gained information that having a strong model helps attract an audience from my audience research and it seems that i have grasped this concept.

Weaknesses

Some people said that a weakness on my front cover would be the used of thick red lines between a section of coverlines and they said that even though it is good to split up the coverlines when viewed at full scale the lines are a bit to thick. Another point made is that the coverlines could be more exuburant as they look quite plain, furthermore my masthead is supposed to have an standing out effect but some felt that it it did not have the "wow" factor and this is something that could be dont to improve my frontcover.

Contents - Strengths

The contents page is well presented with the layout and sections effectively positioned, the use of a unique font for the title works well with continuious colour of blue and red continued from the front cover which works well in attracting the eye. the use of 3 magazines over the top of eachother is different to the normal. the editors note is one of the strongest conventions on the contents page having the model facing himself.
Weaknesses

A weakness on this contents page is that the numbers and text is quite boring and seems like a lazy effort, another weakness i feel is tast the background of the editors note is not completely black and so there is a slight variation in the shade of black.

Double Page Spread - Strengths

The main strengths on this double page spread is the alignment as everything is in line which follows te convention well, the consistency remains with the blue white black and red. an nice touch to the double page is the page numbers 'dose24' works very well and is easily visible. the main headline and variation in text is used well and is very aesthetically pleasing and go well with the type of genre targeted.

Weaknesses

A weakness again that occured in the contents page is the colour of the background as the picture is clearly shot in a studio the shade of black for the background is not completely the same as the black used in photoshop. Something that makes the page look cheesy is the "exclusive" in the top corner whic is not really needed and which is something the double page spread could do without.

Main Task: Double Page Spread FINAL

Main Task Contents Page FINAL

Main Task: Front Cover FINAL

Main Task: Unmanipulated Photos

I am going to use this for my front cover because there is sufficient space for my masthead and coverlines will be able to go around the main photo.

I am not going to use this as my front cover because coverlines will not be appropriate around the edge of the image because they will take over the main image to much.

I am going to use this for my double page spread because there is space on the right hand side for text.

I am not going to use this as my double page because the angle of the shot doesnt allow me to have text majorly on one side.

I am going to use this as my contents because it is a mid close up and it is of a different person from the main artist.

I am not going to use this as my contents because it is to dark and the picture angle would not be correct for a contents page.

This is the image i am going to use on my contents because it is a nice shot and can be easily edited to where it will be used.

Main Task: Profiling Your Audience

Dwayne,19, born for music everything surrounding his life involves music. His hobbies are hanging out with his friends listening to music and playing game. He loves the latest trend of clothing such as Ralph lauren, true religion and all the big brands.

He sees himself as a musician and can relate to the life of a hip-hop artist such as Jayz., French Montana, Max b, he doesnt go to alot of concerts but, has all of the latest music on his mp3. The music is a way to keep him calm and also get him in a motivating mood.

He has a large crowd of friends and they all love the same music and compete about having the latest songs first. The way he dresses makes it clear of the type of music he likes and everyone can see it.

Main Task: Audience Research

I am carrying out research to find out what my potential readers find most interesting and what attracts them to read a magazine. this will help me decide on many aspects that i choose to input into my magazine. i asked a number of people the same questions to sdee what the most common answer for each was, the questions that I asked for my audience research were:

Do you read music magazines?

How many times a week do you read a magazine?

What is your favourite colour out of; Blue, White, Purple and Red?

What attracts you to a magazine, The model, The colour scheme or The masthead?

What section attracts you in a music magazine, Artist updates, Latest downloads or Clothing section?

Does the layout have a effect on whether you read the magazine?

How much would you spend on a magazine?

Do you feel having upcoming talent would be good yes or no?

Do you enjoy music?

What genre of music do you prefer Pop, Rnb, Classical, rock, Dubstep, Indie Or hip hop?

In conclusion I found out things that I should apply and things I shouldnt apply to my magazine, the colour that was most recommended was blue and so I will somehow incorperate this into my magazine. The maximum price that most people were willing to pay for a magazine is £4. Having a easy to read structure is important so that readers wont lose interest. I also know that the model on the front cover is important to people who are going to read the magazine. Further more most people choose hip hop as a final option which follows the theme of my magazine.

Main Task: Double Page Spread Textual Analysis

Denotation

The denotation of this double page spread is of man 'Dr dre' with a medium close shot showing his head and arms. He is sitting on something that is not visible in the picture with his arm resting. there is a dull background as it doesnt give us a clue of a outside surrounding but most probly taken in a studio. The photograph takes over half of the double page spread with his hand going over into the first page. Beside him is title of 'Good things come to those who wait' and the rest is text.

Colour scheme

The colours of this double page spread are very simple and this is basically not having alot of different colours, this is so that it gives the magazine a modern and contemporary look. The colour scheme is just a normal Grey, black and white. This is also gives the feeling of the genre of music that the magazine is being aimed at being that the stories to most rappers is only a certain lifestyle and this is the life that they speak about and it doesnt change relating the the colour scheme which is just bland.

Image

This double page spread has a large image taking up a whole page and his hand goes over into the first part of the double page spread. This is used to break up the page in this case it is positioned beside the text which is quite rare as most are normally under the headline or placed between the colomns of text.

Stand-First

A stand first is used at the start of a article which is a slight introductory paragraph in bold writing. So that the reader is able to understand what is actually going on in the magazine.

Headline

The head line for this article is over the top of the first page and this is in a different font to the rest of the article and is also a very large size. this is used to draw the reader in.

Collumns

A double page spread has a typical way of being laid out and this is normally having collumns where the writing is instead of having the writing going all the way across. This is more of a traditional way of having the writing in a magazine and people are used to it but it also looks more professional than having text taking over the whole page.

Main Task: Contents Page Conventions Diagram

Main Task: Introduction

Hello, my name is Triston, I am currently studying AS Media at Christ the king lewisham. I am starting my Music magazine. I am required to produce a final front cover, contents page and a double page spread. I will be doing a range of textual analysis and planning and research. The genre that I have chosen for my media magazine is Hip Hop, The reason being that I personally listen to this type of music and have knowledge of it. The audience that I am aiming my magazine at is generally teenagers who are mainly interested in music and the things that surround this type of music such as; dance, making there own music and people who actually can relate to the meanings to this type of music. The majority of the work will be carried out on adobe photoshop.

Main Task: Front Cover Textual Analysis

Denotation

The magazine cover consists of a black and white photograph of a man looking directly into the camera. It is a medium long shot allowing us to see his head arms and waist and the position that he has placed them in. He is standing with his hands in his pockets. The background of the photo is white but the part that jayz is standing in only covers the middle section of the magazine. Behind his head is a 'King' masthead around the image is a number of cover lines. The name of the male in the image is in light grey which is not easily visible at first glance. In the bottom left corner is a bar code which would be used if the magazine was going to be purchased.

Masthead

'King' as a Masthead is not very creative but it is distinctive because it is simple, It is just black wording which is San serif which is quite modern and is a commonly used text. Big block capitals are very easy to read and although Jayz's head is in the middle of the writing we are still able to understand what the text says. The use of plan colour black white and grey mainly represent the type of music which is mainly represented by hard life and struggles which means the type of music is aimed at a certain type of category.

Character

The Cover photograph is of a successful American rapper 'Jay z' who is ronoun for his lyrical content and also being the king of music, he has been around for many years and has related his music to alot of different generations.

Composition

He is posed in a stance that gives off a aggressive picture with his hands in his pockets, white t-shirt, jeans and a long chain which is a casual look, but the plannest of him clothes shows how powerful he may be that he can wear clothes not very expensive but still have the presence of a rich person.

Costume

His clothing is a white t-shirt, jeans, a chain with a big watch chosen to appeal to the target audience of the magazine. These clothes are things that he has worn on many different tours, video shoots and events. This intrigues people who like the music of this artist to also dress in a certain way because a lot of artist in the same genre also dress accordingly

NVC

His non verbal communication is aggressive with a frown on his face with his legs apart looking directly into the camera. This gives off a feeling of authority and it almost seems like a slight screw on his face is normal.

Lighting

The lighting is high key without any shadows with the white t-shirt blending into the white background.

Setting
There is hardly any setting as the background doesn't give away any clue of where it should be because the image is most likely to be taken in a studio.

Cover-lines

The Main cover line is 'hip-hop magazine No1 in Russia, KING' this relates to Jay'z because he is seen as the king of his genre of music because he has been around for so many years and has made millions of pounds. The cover line is placed behind Jay'z head and this helps bring out the main image. the different cover lines show us that the music is mainly directly into the hip hop scene as it writes about many other hip hop artist such as Lil Wayne Eminem and Akon. This magazine is mainly targeted at men as there are many male artist but the also use 'Fergie' as a way to intrigue women readers. the cover lines are different colours being that some have a back colour and they seem to have a different colour for each cover line next to each other this attracts the eye to each one because they are not all the same. the text used is San serif and this also gives a more appealing look to its readers. The covers lines are mainly around the image of jay z with on of then '2009 hip-hop cash king' going over his white t shirt making it stand out more.

Target Audience

Considering everything this would mainly be aimed at males ages 15 upwards, people from a young age would have a lot of information about this type of music because it is world wide and the Internet gives people the ability to find out things about this genre of music. People who are very interested in this genre and who may feel their life styles relate to the type of music.
